Peptide microarray-based identification of dormancy-associated ... - Nature.com

Abstract Multi-stage tuberculosis (TB) vaccines composed of active- and dormancy-associated antigens are promising to trigger the immune protection against all TB stages. However, scientists are still in quest of the suitable vaccine candidates. In this study, we identified the potential targets for this vaccine in a high TB burden country, Thailand. Peptide microarray was applied to gauge IgA and IgG antibodies specific to 16,730 linear epitopes of 52 dormancy-associated Mycobacterium tuberculosis ( M. tb ) proteins in three study groups: active tuberculosis (ATB), latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) and endemic healthy control (EHC). Preferential IgA recognition against epitopes of dormancy-associated proteins was identified in LTBI group. Validation of these findings revealed that LTBI subjects exhibited the greater levels of Rv2659c- and Rv1738-specific IgA than those of household contacts, but less than did ATB subjects. Frequencies of IFNγ-producing CD4 + and CD8 + T

W hen it comes to designing a wellness routine, decision fatigue is all too common. There are loads of workouts, mental health practices, and eating plans to choose from, all with their own corresponding benefits. But for anyone wishing to the best practices of the longest (and healthiest) living people on the planet, there are four longevity lifestyle tips that, when applied, can truly move the needle when it comes to fighting disease (and provides fulfillment along the way), according to Dean Ornish, MD, and author Anne Ornish—a couple who research and write about which behaviors improve chronic diseases like diabetes. The couple is sharing some of their findings in their new book, Undo It! With Ornish ,  where they explain that many illnesses, including chronic inflammation, oxidative stress (an interruption in the natural balance of free radicals and antioxidants in your system), and changes to your microbiome, originate from the same sources. They

Efforts to Grow Neurology and Attract Young Medical Professionals ... - Neurology Live

WATCH TIME: 3 minutes "The more that we stress that this is a growing career, that we're able to do more for people in a variety of different diseases. Back when I was training, the idea was that neurologists gave you the diagnosis, and then that was it. It couldn't be further from the truth." In the US and across the world, the lack of neurologists and neurologic services to account for the rising number patients with neurologic disorders has been well documented. In turn, the current neurology mismatch reduces access to care, worsens patient outcomes, and erodes career satisfaction and quality of life for neurologists as they face increasingly insurmountable demands. The American Academy of Neurology (AAN) has had several ongoing initiatives to help reduce and resolve the existing mismatch, including addressing these issues at the organization's Annual Meeting. At this year's meeting, held April 22-27, in Boston, Massachusetts, NeurologyLive ® sat down with

Learn How a Herpes Simplex Diagnosis Affects You - Giddy

Statistically, it's likely you may have the virus. Learn how this diagnosis can affect you. Herpes simplex virus (HSV) infections are common. It's estimated that between 50 percent and 80 percent of adults in the United States have oral herpes, which can present as cold sores and fever blisters in or around the mouth. There is no cure for this virus, as the infection is lifelong and its symptoms may recur for years. "Herpes is a sexually transmitted infection or STI," explained Monty Swarup, M.D., FACOG, board-certified in OB/GYN in Chandler, Arizona and the founder of HPD Rx. "There are two types of herpes: HSV-1 and HSV-2. HSV-1 is oral herpes but can lead to HSV-2, known as genital herpes." About 12 percent of people between the ages of 14 and 49 have an HSV-2 infection, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Although the prevalence of HSV-1 has dipped in recent years, every age group may have become more susceptible to
