Almost a third of directors of adult social care services said they had been asked to make savings collectively totalling £83.7 million for the year to March 2024, research by the Association of Directors of Adult Social Services (Adass) said. The organisation, which has published the results of its autumn snap survey – sent to every director in the 153 English councils with adult social care responsibilities – said those savings come in addition to the £806 million in savings which directors across England already committed to make in their budgets this year. ljubaphoto / Getty Images The one thing you can count on with Social Security is that something will change every year — and just about every working or retired American will feel the impact. That will be the case in 2024, with several changes slated for the new year. Most of the changes will give people a financial lift, but a couple will have the opposite effect. Providence Health System Announces Closure of Outpatient Lab Services in California - Medriva

Image
Providence, a nonprofit, faith-based health system, recently announced the closure of its outpatient lab services across multiple California hospitals. This decision is part of a broader strategy to enhance care delivery and foster collaborative partnerships with other lab service organizations. The closure will not affect inpatient, emergency department, or outpatient department testing, providing a level of reassurance to patients who rely on these essential services. Furthermore, this move will not result in job losses, as all employees will be retained with no changes to their wages or benefits. The Impact of the Closure With the closure of all outpatient labs, including those at St. Joseph and Redwood Memorial Hospitals, Providence aims to concentrate its resources on critical care services. This move is expected to support pathology, cytology, transfusions, and hospital perioperative testing at the affected acute care ministries. However, patients seeking outpatient lab service

Amanda F Goddard, MD - MaineHealth

As a child I would briefly wonder how something I could not see could cause me to be sidelined to the couch. I was fascinated when I learnt that it could be due to an unseen virus rather than me going outside with wet hair. My fascination with the small things I could not see but could make me sick grew while at Colby College which prompted me to work for a few years as a microbiologist.   As a medical student I had the opportunity to spend a month at Maine Medical Center with the pediatric infectious diseases team and I am happy to be back.   It is a great privilege to be part of care teams that try to help when a common infection turns unexpectedly more serious or when an uncommon infection occurs. Chronic pain is on the rise in the UK, affecting an estimated 28 million people, or over 40 per cent of the population, compared to one in five worldwide. The term is used to apply to a number of persistent conditions, with the International Classification of Diseases defining pain as chronic if it continues or recurs for more than three months.   It is more commonly reported among certain groups, including women (who account for more than 70 per cent of sufferers, according to some studies) and older people. Those who are overweight or obese, or who have had an injury, are more likely to be afflicted too. Sadly, there is no agreed cure for chronic pain as yet. Types of chronic pain conditions  The most common chronic pain condition in the UK is backache, which affects around 5.5 million adults in the UK and accounts for 12 million lost work days each year, according to Unison, the UK's largest union.
