Chemicals Commonly Found in Cosmetics and Personal Hygiene ... - SciTechDaily

Preterm birth, also known as premature birth, is the delivery of a baby before 37 weeks of pregnancy. This can lead to a range of health complications for both the baby and the mother, including low birth weight, breathing difficulties, and developmental delays. A recent study by researchers at Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons suggests that chemicals present in the vagina, possibly from personal care products, may play a role in causing spontaneous preterm birth. A study of 232 pregnant women revealed that a small number of non-biological chemicals, commonly found in cosmetics and personal hygiene products, showed a strong correlation with preterm birth. "Our findings suggest that we need to look more closely at whether common environmental exposures are in fact causing preterm births and, if so, where these exposures are coming from," says study co-leader Tal Korem, Ph.D., assistant professor in the Program for Mathematical Genomics and the Depa

Why Novant charges for MyChart messages and UNC Health doesn't - Becker's Hospital Review

Image
To bill or not to bill for MyChart messages? Two North Carolina health systems have different answers to that question. Winston-Salem-based Novant Health decided to charge for the patient portal messages after an influx of them in recent years, while Chapel Hill-based UNC Health opted against it after evaluating the pros and cons, North Carolina Health News and The Charlotte Ledger reported Feb. 8. "We believe that charging new fees wouldn't significantly reduce virtual messaging, won't help physicians manage the requests for information more efficiently, and will likely make patients unhappy," Matthew Ewend, MD, chief clinical officer of UNC Health, emailed the news outlets. Still, Novant has billed for less than 1 percent of its MyChart messages since the change went into effect last July, for an average charge of $10, according to the story. The fees only apply to a new healthcare complaint or a problem that hasn't been discussed recently. Other North C

Gwyneth Paltrow's new guru backs coffee enemas and cuddles - New York Post

Image
Gwyneth Paltrow's latest health guru is a "functional medicine practitioner" who advocates coffee enemas and cuddling, The Post can reveal. The Oscar-winner — currently in civil court in Utah where she is being sued over a ski crash — sparked claims this month she was promoting disordered eating by boasting about her diet of intermittent fasting, bone-broth lunches and paleo dinners. Paltrow used an Instagram story to claim the regimen was based on "my medical results and extensive testing I've done over time" then credited her doctor Will Cole with creating the diet. Paltrow said Cole had worked with her on "inflammation" and the affects of her long Covid, adding: "So I've been working with Dr. Cole to really focus on foods that aren't inflammatory. So lots of vegetables, cooked vegetables, all kinds of protein, healthy carbs to really lower inflammation and it's been working really well

VUMC accredited for primary ciliary dyskinesia care | VUMC ... - VUMC Reporter

by Nancy Humphrey Vanderbilt University Medical Center has been named a fully accredited adult PCD (primary ciliary dyskinesia) Foundation Clinical and Research Center site. It joins Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt, which received the pediatric accreditation in 2018. The foundation's 45 accredited sites work together to improve awareness of the rare inherited disease and care for the patients who have it. The adult accreditation will allow pediatric patients seen at Monroe Carell to seamlessly transition their care to adult clinicians when they graduate to adult care. PCD affects motile (moving) cilia, tiny hairlike structures that line the airways, including nasal passages, sinuses and lungs, Eustachian tubes of the ear, the reproductive organs and ventricles of the brain. Motile cilia move together in wavelike motions to carry mucus toward the mouth to be coughed or sneezed out of the body. Mucus contains inhaled dust, bacteria and other small pa

Search results According to the search strategy (see PRISMA diagram, Figure 1), 2034 articles were found in the accessed databases. Of these, 550 articles were excluded after database screening and removal of duplicates and 1484 studies were read for titles and abstracts. Analyzing titles and abstracts resulted in the exclusion of 1473 studies for not meeting the eligibility criteria. The remaining eleven (11) records were read in full and three (3) of them were excluded for the following reasons: two (2) records had data published in poster format, which had data from two other included studies in this review, being excluded, to avoid duplication of data analysis. One (1) study published in trial format was excluded, as there were no results available; there was an attempt to contact the authors of this study to obtain information on partial data, unpublished or in preprint, however, there was no response to email.
