Network analysis of comorbid aggressive behavior and testosterone among bipolar disorder patients: a cross-sectional ... - Nature.com

Image
Abstract Testosterone has complex effects on psychological traits and behavior; it is associated with social dominance and competition and is a potential human sex pheromone. This study aimed to investigate the associations between testosterone levels, aggressive behavior, and manic symptoms using a network analysis among bipolar disorder (BD) patients in psychiatric emergency departments (PED). Data from January 2021 and March 2022 BD patients in PED were analyzed. Manic symptoms were assessed using the Young Mania Rating Scale (YMRS). Aggression was assessed with subscale of the PANSS scale (PANSS-AG). The undirected network structures of testosterone levels, aggressive behavior, and manic symptoms were estimated, and centrality and bridge centrality indices were examined. Network stability was examined using the case-dropping procedure. The Network Comparison Test (NCT) was conducted to evaluate whether network characteristics differed by gender. We recruited a total of 898 BD patie...

Frequent Cannabis Use Increases Risk for Lung Diseases - Medscape

Image
BOSTON — Daily cannabis use may raise the risk of developing chronic diseases such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), according to the research presented at the Society of General Internal Medicine (SGIM) 2024 Annual Meeting. The abstract adds to a growing body of evidence suggesting that smoking cannabis, much like tobacco, poses significant risks to respiratory health, according to Alison Rustagi, MD, PhD, an assistant professor at the University of California, San Francisco, and a primary care physician in the Division of General Internal Medicine at the San Francisco VA Medical Center, who presented the research at SGIM. "Our research indicates that cannabis use is not benign," Rustagi said. "It's crucial for both the public and healthcare providers to recognize cannabis use as a potential risk factor for chronic lung diseases." Rustagi and her team analyzed cross-sectional data from over 434,000 adults who completed surveys on risk-...

CHARLESTON, WV (WOWK) — West Virginia is targeting kids and moms for better health and is offering substantial cash benefits for food. Managing Pain - Surgical Guide to Left Posterior Total Hip Replacement Surgery - HSS | Hospital for Special Surgery

Image
How Does It Feel? Recovering from any surgery involves pain and discomfort. The Hospital's team approach to pain management can help reduce your discomfort and thus speed your recovery. Pain management, however, begins with you. Since no objective tests exist to measure what you are feeling, you must help the staff by describing the pain, pinpointing its location and judging its intensity, as well as reporting any changes. Pain may be constant or sporadic, as well as sharp, burning, tingling or aching. A pain scale is used to help you and the staff gauge the level of pain and effectiveness of treatment. People used to think that severe pain after surgery was something they "just had to put up with." While it is reasonable to expect some discomfort following surgery, the current treatment options greatly reduce the level of pain most patients have. Your description will help us provide you with a plan of care. Even under your personal pain management program, your pain...

Kidney disease: How to protect yourself and the symptoms the NHS may not spot - The Telegraph

Image
The UK is facing an unprecedented kidney disease crisis, one which could cost the NHS up to £11 billion per year by 2033 if left unchecked. This is due to the number of patients with chronic kidney disease ending up on dialysis machines, due to one or both kidneys failing, a growing demand which threatens to overwhelm the health service. According to a report from the charity Kidney Research UK, there are currently 30,000 people in the UK who require dialysis, a number which is predicted to rise to 143,000 in the next decade. Crucially, the charity's findings indicated that one of the problems is that patients are typically being diagnosed too late, with the signs of kidney disease only spotted once the disease is at a more advanced stage. "This is concerning because if chronic kidney disease is caught earlier, there may be a better chance to stop progression to kidney failure," says Dr Tom Oates, a consultant nep...

Students explore how their lives link to sociology in new publication - GCU News - GCU Today

Image
Junior Alejandra Merino is a student editor for the Sociology/Social Work Review. Photos by Ralph Freso Alejandra Merino's piece begins with contemplation. In my family, everybody has a part to play. I am a first-generation Mexican American. That means being the perfect, grateful, resilient, well-mannered daughter, doing everything to give back to her parents. This is not a college junior's social media post. Her next sentence: I have played this part so well it became my identity, my sense of self, also known as "self-formation," a concept proposed by social theorist George Herbert Mead. Merino is a Grand Canyon University sociology major and co-editor of the recently published Sociology/Social Work Review, the second volume in Dr. Tim Larkin's quest to enlist students to engage with the world and their place in it and intersect it with sociology and social work concepts. Dr. Tim Larkin "It makes them come alive," said Larkin. ...
