What Causes Conjunctivitis? A Panoply of Pathogens, Study Shows - Medpage Today

Image
Pathogens associated with acute infectious conjunctivitis varied among regions, a cross-sectional study showed. Among 52 patients from four sites in the U.S. and one in Israel, RNA deep sequencing found human adenovirus species D in a quarter of patients, with a wide range of pathogens, including human coronavirus 229E, SARS-CoV-2, and herpes simplex virus type 1, also identified, reported Thuy Doan, MD, PhD, of the University of California San Francisco, and colleagues. Of these patients, 62% presented with purulent discharge, often thought to be a sign of bacterial infection, but only 8% of patients were confirmed to have bacterial conjunctivitis. A majority (54%) were infected with viruses, which do not respond to antibiotics, the authors noted in JAMA Ophthalmology . "This study demonstrates it is harder to predict pathogens by clinical presentation than we may have thought," said co-author Gerami D. Seitzman, MD, also of the University of California San Francisco. ...

Why Barbie resonated with me as a mid-career woman physician: a reflection for National Women Physicians Day - Kevin MD

Image
(Spoiler alert: contains spoilers for the movie  Barbie .) In  Barbie , a singular scene resonated powerfully with Women in Medicine across the land. You know the one. Shortly after Ken and Barbie leave Barbie Land and arrive in the Real World, Ken ventures off, discovers The Patriarchy, waltzes into a hospital emergency room, and demands the first woman he sees to perform an appendectomy. What are his qualifications? He doesn't need any. He's a man. When the woman, dressed in hospital scrubs, promptly dismisses his absurd claim, he doubles down and insists on speaking to a doctor. "You are talking to a doctor," she says, in a voice that tells the audience she's said this many (many) times before. He stares at her blankly until he spots a man in a white coat in another room. "There he is!" Ken turns his back on the woman to chase down the man—who was probably a radiology tech. Poor Ken. The Patriarchy can be so confusing...

There has been an outbreak of H5N1 bird flu in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso's capital. The viral disease, also called avian influenza, killed 441 chickens out of a flock of 641 on a farm. There have been several outbreaks bird flu across Africa over the past 18 years. Nigeria was the first African country to report an outbreak in February 2006. Daniel Oluwayelu, a virologist and bird flu expert, tells us more about the disease. What is bird flu? Avian influenza, or bird flu, is a highly contagious viral disease of birds caused by the influenza A viruses. It was previously known as "fowl plague" and was recognised as an infectious disease of poultry in Italy as far back as 1878. Although avian influenza A viruses occur naturally among wild aquatic birds worldwide, they are also known to infect other animals, including ducks, chickens, turkeys, pigs, whales, horses, seals, dogs and cats. Exposure to animal influenza viruses can lead to infection and disease in humans – ranging...

An automatic speech analytics program for digital assessment of stress burden and psychosocial health | npj Mental ... - Nature.com

Image
Abstract The stress burden generated from family caregiving makes caregivers particularly prone to developing psychosocial health issues; however, with early diagnosis and intervention, disease progression and long-term disability can be prevented. We developed an automatic speech analytics program (ASAP) for the detection of psychosocial health issues based on clients' speech. One hundred Cantonese-speaking family caregivers were recruited with the results suggesting that the ASAP can identify family caregivers with low or high stress burden levels with an accuracy rate of 72%. The findings indicate that digital health technology can be used to assist in the psychosocial health assessment. While the conventional method requires rigorous assessments by specialists with multiple rounds of questioning, the ASAP can provide a cost-effective and immediate initial assessment to identify high levels of stress among family caregivers so they can be referred to social workers and healthcar...
