Okinawa Gov. Denny Tamaki meets the press at the prefectural headquarters in Naha, southern Japan, on January 6, amid a recent spike in coronavirus infections. (Kyodo News/Getty Images) The United States will bring in new measures on US military bases in light of the rise in Covid-19 cases, according to a Thursday press release from the United States Forces Japan (USFJ).  The decision comes after heavy criticism by local governments over the handling of Covid transmission among military personnel in Japan's southernmost prefecture of Okinawa. Earlier this week, the governor of Okinawa -- which is home to several American bases -- blasted the US military for failing to contain the spread of the Omicron variant.  "I'm outraged because the rise in the number of infected among US military personnel suggests that their management is not enough," Denny Tamaki, Okinawa's prefectural governor, said in a press conference Sunday.  What...

Lima Syndrome is when the hostage takers start sympathizing with the hostages. And London Syndrome is when hostages become argumentative toward their captors — often with deadly results. In all, ten cities around the world carry a unique burden: they have a psychological disorder named after them. In the September 2014 issue of Names , the journal of the American Name Society, Ernest Lawrence Abel listed and described them. He arranged them in three categories: four tourism-related, three linked to hostage situations, and three "other." Jerusalem Syndrome First reported in the 1930s, Jerusalem Syndrome affects about 100 visitors every year. Of those, about 40 need to be hospitalized. Symptoms usually recede a few weeks after the visit. Uniquely religious in focus, this syndrome manifests as the delusion that the s...

A new study provides the first comprehensive estimate of the impact of antimicrobial-resistant bacteria across the globe. The authors conclude that 1.27 million deaths in 2019 could be directly attributed to it. These results emphasize the need for collective global action, such as developing new antibiotics and vaccines and improving surveillance of antimicrobial resistance . Antimicrobial resistance is one of the greatest threats to global public health, according to the World Health Organization (WHO) . This is because the emergence of bacter...

Role of Glycoscience in Viral Surveillance - News-Medical.net

Image
As more and more infectious diseases emerge caused by viral pathogens, global health is endangered as never before. A striking illustration of this is provided by the ongoing pandemic of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Glycoscience comprises a broad range of knowledge and research on simple and complex carbohydrate metabolism, anabolism, structure, and function. Glycans are expressed in all microorganisms, including prions, as well as in all higher organisms; thus, it is not surprising that their biological and disease impacts are profound. Image Credit: Rost9/Shutterstock.com Background Many viruses have glycoproteins that serve various essential functions in viral pathogenesis and transmission. These include protein folding and stabilization, viral infection by recognition of host receptors and binding to the host cell, and viral invasion, and immune escape of the virus from the i...
